RESEDA : New Panel to Focus on Quake Recovery

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Laura Chick has appointed a 19-member advisory committee composed of residents and business people from her 3rd District in the West Valley to review options under state redevelopment laws to assist in earthquake recovery.
Last week, the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency identified areas hit hard by the Jan. 17 Northridge quake and suggested declaring them redevelopment areas to help repair damaged areas. However, the idea is controversial because redevelopment agencies have the ability to seize blighted property under the power of eminent domain.
The CRA is expected to make its final recommendation to the City Council in November.
“The CRA can offer special financing to assist the West Valley in earthquake recovery, and we’d be foolish not to explore this option,” Chick said in a written statement. “However, I’m forming this committee because I want to hear detailed input from the community on whether this is a direction in which we should go.”
The committee will meet at 7 p.m. on various Tuesdays through mid-November at Chick’s district office, 19040 Vanowen St., Reseda.
