PORT HUENEME : RV Resort Proposal to Get Another Look

The Port Hueneme City Council will consider tonight whether to drop a plan to build a recreational vehicle resort on a city-owned beach, or redesign the proposal and resubmit it to the California Coastal Commission.

The Coastal Commission rejected the city’s 144-space project last Wednesday because members considered the beachfront site an environmentally sensitive plant and wildlife habitat.

City Manager Richard Velthoen said another option is to postpone action until a newly constituted council takes office in January. Three of the five council seats are on the November ballot.

But Mayor Orvene Carpenter said he believes the council should proceed with the project.

“I am a firm believer that we should try to continue to purse the RV resort so we can have a source of money,” Carpenter said.
