Costa Mesa — Amid complaints by residents, the Planning Commission this week approved a conditional-use permit to allow an auto repair shop to operate within 200 feet of their houses on the west side of the city.
The residents, who live in a 93-home community called California Seabreeze, complained that too much noise and smoke already came from the industrial park across the street, and asked that the permit be denied.
Robert Moroso, the shop owner, said that while he sympathized with the residents, his business will be different because it only specializes in corvettes.
Shari Sumner, a board member of the California Seabreeze Homeowner’s Assn., said an acoustical engineer took sound-level measurements in November and concluded that the noise levels were already 17 decibels above what the city allows.
