Wolf Again Named Top Dog in City Section

Pitcher Randy Wolf of El Camino Real High has been selected City Section 4-A Division player of the year for the second consecutive season, the first player in 42 years to win the award two years in a row.

Wolf, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound senior left-hander, led El Camino Real (23-7) to its second consecutive City championship, pitching all nine innings in a 7-6 victory over Chatsworth last week at Dodger Stadium.

Wolf was 12-3 with 147 strikeouts and a 1.19 earned-run average in 112 innings this season. He also batted .443 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in.

Wolf was 3-0 during the playoffs, and 5-0 in postseason play the past two years. In 1993, Wolf pitched a no-hitter and a perfect game in consecutive starts, and recorded a save at Dodger Stadium in the final against Chatsworth.

Wolf, whose two-year record was 23-4, has signed with Pepperdine and was a 25th-round draft pick this month by the Dodgers.

Despite all the success and accolades, this was a difficult season for Wolf. His father, James, died of a heart attack in March at 56. For the remainder of the season, El Camino Real players wore a black-and-white patch on their sleeves bearing James Wolf’s initials.

“I don’t know if you can put it all into words,” Wolf said Tuesday. “I guess I never thought I’d have to mature so much in one year. And I wish I didn’t have to this way.”

Wolf said he is undecided whether he will sign a professional contract or attend college.

“He had a tremendous year (in 1993),” El Camino Real Coach Mike Maio said. “And then, with people telling him to duplicate what he did, that made it tough. But he came out and did just as well, overcoming a traumatic family problem as well. I can’t say enough about the character of the kid. And his numbers speak for themselves.”

Billy Consolo of Dorsey High (1951-52) is the only other player to earn back-to-back honors in the award’s 57-year history.

The remainder of the All-City team is dominated by Valley players. First-team selections include: pitchers Jim DeBiase (Chatsworth) and Carlos Velazco (Sylmar); outfielders Ray Daryabigi (Chatsworth), Pedro Rodriguez (Birmingham), Samuel Vizcarra (Poly) and Jimmy Landress (Granada Hills); infielders Craig Carlton (El Camino Real), Art Diaz (Sylmar), Bryan LaCour (Chatsworth) and Carlos Nunez (Reseda); catchers Kevin Serr (Kennedy) and Nick Andrisano (Taft) and utilityman Jerry Delgado (Poly). Verdugo Hills outfielder Greg Martin was selected to the 3-A team.
