A UC Irvine professor has been appointed to the Atascadero State Hospital Advisory Board, Gov. Pete Wilson announced Tuesday.
Raymond W. Novaco, a professor of psychology and social behavior, was one of two people appointed to the board. The other was Lois R. Turner, 69, of Half Moon Bay.
As part of his academic research, Novaco developed programs for the treatment of clinical anger and aggression that are now used worldwide.
Novaco, 47, a Costa Mesa resident, is also a fellow of the American Psychological Assn. and a member of the International Society for Research on Aggression. In 1993, he was named Distinguished Visiting Professor at Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Tex.
The Atascadero State Hospital board advises the California Department of Mental Health and the Legislature on the hospital’s programs, which include coordinating community health programs for the mentally ill.
