Jump in Advertising Spending Predicted: Advertisers are expected to increase domestic spending by 7.2% this year, the fastest expansion in six years, the industry’s best-known forecaster said. Robert Coen of the advertising agency McCann-Erickson Worldwide said domestic ad spending should reach $148 billion this year--including a 7.8% national increase and a 6.3% advance among local advertisers. Coen said national ad spending has grown much faster than expected in December, when he projected a 6.3% rise in overall spending for 1994. At either level, the increase would be the largest since spending rose at a 7.7% rate in 1988.
