Nation IN BRIEF : OREGON : Mayors Support Clinton on Welfare

The U.S. Conference of Mayors voiced objections to cuts in entitlement programs and the treatment of community service jobs that could put welfare recipients to work. But they said they support President Clinton’s overall $9.3-billion plan because it is “generally consistent” with their own previous proposals. In an address to the mayors meeting in Portland, Health and Human Services Secretary Donna Shalala said that she anticipates great input from local officials as the plan moves through Congress. The Administration plans to unveil the details Tuesday. “We want mayors to play a major role,” Shalala said. “We are particularly mindful of the perspective you offer as representatives of many of this nation’s low-income people.”
