HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS / SOUTHERN SECTION BOYS’ FINALS

Brentwood 14 1/3, Pasadena Poly 6 2/3--In a key victory, Brentwood’s No. 2 doubles team of Greg Lewis and Kevin Pivnick upset Poly’s No. 1 doubles team of Jason Tan and David Newhall, 6-3, to clinch the Division III title for Brentwood (19-3) at the Riviera Country Club.
Keith Sarkisian, Brentwood’s first-year coach, wasn’t surprised at Lewis and Pivnick’s clutch play, saying: “When Greg plays well, he plays very well, and even when Kevin plays bad, he plays well.”
Lewis and Pivnick won all three of their sets, as did Brentwood’s No. 1 doubles team of Tyler Barnett and Scott Kaufman. Adam Gross, Brentwood’s No. 1 singles player, also won all three of his sets.
It was the fifth time in six years that these two teams have met in the Southern Section final. Pasadena Poly (19-4) defeated Brentwood for the title in 1989, ’91 and ‘92; Brentwood beat Pasadena Poly for the championship in ’90.
Both teams made significant changes from their usual lineups in an attempt to win more points in doubles, but Brentwood prevailed, winning all but two doubles sets.
