MARLBORO, Mass. — A man who was trapped upside-down in a pile of boulders for 10 hours was rescued by firefighters who had to dig underneath the rocks with their hands.
Francis Queenan, 52, of Marlboro suffered cuts and bruises and was in fair condition Tuesday at University of Massachusetts Medical Hospital.
Police said Queenan apparently was reaching into the pile behind a department store Monday and slid in about 6 1/2 feet, head-first and at a 45-degree angle.
He was stuck for about eight hours before anyone saw him and called rescuers.
Wedged between cold boulders up to eight feet in diameter, Queenan was showing signs of hypothermia as rescuers freed him, said Fire Capt. Jim Diamond.
