Elvera S. Burger; Watercolorist, Wife of Retired Chief Justice

Elvera S. Burger, 84, a noted amateur watercolorist, a trustee of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., and wife of retired U.S. Chief Justice Warren Burger. Mrs. Burger grew up in St. Paul, Minn., graduated from the University of Minnesota and was a grade school teacher in St. Paul before her marriage in 1933. The Burgers moved to Washington during the Eisenhower Administration when he was appointed assistant attorney general in charge of the Justice Department’s civil division. Burger was named chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1969 and retired in 1986 to head the Commission on the Bicentennial of the U.S. Constitution. In Arlington, Va., on Mondayof a longstanding heart condition.
