WOODLAND HILLS : Walkathon to Benefit Pierce College Farm

Pierce College officials hope to raise more than chicken feed at a July 4 walkathon. It’s goose feed they’re really after.
The first such fund-raiser for the Pierce College farm will, among other things, help pay for the reseeding of pasture areas where each winter everything edible is gobbled up by hundreds of Canada geese that make Pierce their temporary home.
“We want to make sure there is food, so the geese continue to land on the farm,” Pierce President Mary Lee said. “It’s a spectacular event to see all those geese landing and taking off and eating.”
In the past, Pierce has reseeded the land at a cost of between $5,000 and $10,000, Lee said.
The 5K and 2K walks at 8:30 a.m. are expected to raise up to $7,000 for reseeding, repairs to barns and fences and the purchase of livestock.
It kicks off a daylong Independence Day celebration co-sponsored by the Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce, which will include live music, food, games, recreational swimming and fireworks.
Those interested in participating in the walkathon should call (818) 719-6425 to sign up.
