Cal State Northridge catcher Eric Gillespie has been named the Western Athletic Conference West Division player of the week.
Gillespie, a freshman from Long Beach, went four for 11 in three games last week against division-leading San Diego State. He also drove in the winning run with two out in the bottom of the 12th to give the Matadors a 7-6 victory.
Gillespie entered the week batting .340 and ranks second on the team with 42 runs batted in.
Bill Scheffels completed his transfer from Simi Valley High to the Simi Valley Adult School and Career Institute on Tuesday, meaning The Times’ 1993 Ventura County pitcher of the year will miss the end of his senior season.
Scheffels was suspended last Wednesday for allegedly making a false bomb threat at school. He dropped out of Simi Valley High this week, rather than face an expulsion hearing.
