A Little Soup to Calm the Nerves

Robin Abcarian’s piece about her visit to her grandmother in the Armenian Ararat Home in Mission Hills reminds me of my own grandmother in Erzerum, Armenia. (“Taking Disaster Down to Basics: Helping Grandma,” Jan. 19).
Abcarian says: “They are, after all, Armenians. Armenians are used to hardship. An earthquake was not going to devastate this group.”
In my grandmother’s case, when there were earthquakes, she would round up her kin, lead them outdoors, counsel them and then tread back to her own home, where she would prepare vosp abour, a hearty lentil soup, for the group scattered outside. Her talents in leadership and cooking did wonders for their morale.
