CHEERS!

I am a five-years-sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous who applauds Colman Andrews’ “Getting Drunk” (Jan. 2). How typically American it is to go overboard with the drinking-is-bad-for-everyone mentality. I don’t drink because I have a problem with alcohol. But why lay a guilt trip on those without such an affliction?

I hope that someday I happen to meet Andrews in a bar, imbibe a bit with him and congratulate him on being willing to accept responsibility for his alcohol consumption rather than blaming it on society, his alcoholic father or whatever.

Congratulations on Andrews’ article, which was so darned politically incorrect. It was refreshing to discover something of this sort in the bleeding-heart Los Angeles Times.

Thanks for that excellent essay defending our God-given right to drink alcoholic beverages. I say “God-given” because the Lord Jesus Christ drank. As a born-again Christian, I am aware of God’s molding me in the image of His Son. If it was good enough for the sinless Son of God to imbibe, it’s good enough for me.

How did such a reasoned, intelligent article escape the editorial ax of a staff that regularly panders to the tofu-chomping, Perrier-swilling PC fringe?

It’s time that people learned to tolerate and respect the practices of their neighbors instead of forcing their morality on others and calling their differences “diseases.”

Thanks, Colman! I’ll drink a toast to you later today when my work is done and I don’t need to drive.
