Stankowski Leads Newport Classic

NEWPORT BEACH — First-year PGA pro Paul Stankowski opened a two-shot lead after the first day of the Taco Bell Newport Classic pro-am golf tournament Friday at the Newport Beach Country Club.
Stankowski, of El Paso, Tex., birdied the final two holes for a seven-under-par 64. Paul Goydos of Long Beach is five under, with four others another shot back.
Stankowski is also leading the pro-am division with partner John Jester of Mercer Island, Wash., at nine-under 62.
The tournament’s final round will be played today beginning at 7:07 a.m. The pros are competing for a $13,000 first prize.
