Reading Workshop Scheduled Today

Ventura County parents interested in learning new ways to share the pleasure of reading with their children are invited to bring their youngsters to a workshop this morning in Ventura.
Sponsored by gifted-education associations and a Ventura children’s bookstore, the workshop will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Guthrie Hall at Ventura College. The cost is $6 per person.
Although the workshop is open to parents with children of any age, it is geared mainly toward students who are 8 to 14 years old and their parents.
The event will feature two speakers: Robin Rector Krupp, a children’s author who dresses in costume to present her talks on literature, and bookstore owner Jody Fickes.
In her talk, Krupp will focus on showing parents and children how to create their own books.
Fickes will suggest nonfiction books for children on subjects ranging from earthquakes to art. She will also suggest projects that parents and children can do together at home, such as simple science experiments, to aid students’ understanding of nonfiction books.
