NO ART TO MURDER

So Wendy Lesser would have us believe that we view true-life murders as artful theater and any given murderer as “the lead actor in a tragedy” (“Homicidal Tendencies,” Dec. 12). I don’t think so. Lesser is glorifying these acts of cowardly violence, thrusting the scum who perpetrate them into the limelight while the victims become only nameless, faceless statistics. This is not a science project we’re talking about here; it’s coldblooded murder.

It is almost five years since I lost my companion to a murderer. It’s revolting to think that someone like Lesser would have been entertained by the evening-news footage of the police carrying him away in a body bag. Or that her unappeasable curiosity would have led her to devour the unfair and distorted newspaper articles devoted to his brutal killing.
Murder is neither mysterious nor fascinating--nor something that can be admired for its curious craft by any compassionate human being.
