NATION IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Clinton Signs Breast Cancer Detection Bill

President Clinton signed legislation to expand early breast cancer detection efforts, calling it “an important national need.” The new law allows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to increase grants to states for breast cancer treatment and detection. Clinton said more than 2.5 million women in the United States have breast cancer and about 182,000 new cases will be detected this year. “Though we don’t know what causes breast cancer, how to prevent it or cure it, we do know that broader access to mammograms will make an important medical, personal and economic difference due to increased early detection,” Clinton said.
