Wrapping Up Season for a Nice Holiday Gift

It is time to review Gene Wojciechowski’s August predictions for the ’93 college football season:

1. Missouri will beat Texas A&M; on the road in the biggest upset of the third week of the season (Texas A&M; won, 73-0).

2. Arizona will win the Pac-10.

3. On Nov. 6, Bill Walsh will get revenge on John Robinson (USC won, 45-20).

4. Gene listed five good reasons why Florida State will beat Notre Dame in South Bend.

5. Florida State will beat Syracuse in the Fiesta Bowl and Bobby Bowden will have his championship at last (He could be half right. Syracuse, however, is not quite good enough at 6-4-1 to play for the national title).

It goes to show that what an expert says in August really doesn’t mean much. Keep trying, Gene.

Editor’s note: Arizona did share the Pac-10 title with UCLA and USC.

There are only 25 “top” teams but 19 bowl games. This just doesn’t pencil out. Let’s eliminate the myriad of meaningless bowls and concentrate only on the majors: Rose, Cotton, Orange, Sugar and Alamo.

P.S. I am a Cal alumnus.

Well, well. The college football season is nearly over and the postseason bickering over the bowl matchups is in full swing. As a Nebraska alumnus, I must say, “How sweet it is.” Without all this fuss over the bowl games, college football would be as interesting as a badminton match.

Is is just me, or is it incredible that ABC chose to give the West Coast Michigan State vs. Penn State rather than Florida-Florida State?

Who programs their sports, Dan Quayle?
