OUTLOOK
Irby, in his second season, will have to go it without Maggie Gorska, who is pursuing a modeling career after graduating, and her 16-plus points and 10-plus rebounds a game. Even so, Irby believes the Diablos will have their moments because of fundamentally sound defense. “I think we will be competitive,” he said. “It’s a young team. We don’t have any seniors but we had a lot of experience in the summer and we have three returning starters. I think we have the ability--it’s just a matter of whether we do the right things.” Okura, a second-team all-league pick, is a tenacious defender and rebounder who averaged about 10 points. Whitaker (honorable mention) is a captain and the best all-around player. She can dribble well with either hand and shoots well outside and in. “She’s kind of a street-smart player,” Irby said. Shelley Higham, an extremely quick point guard, has improved her ballhandling. She already was a good passer. Hill, a part-time starter last year, will start at power forward. Barker will also start.
