NEWPORT BEACH — A former Newport Beach police officer now working for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency was accused Wednesday of threatening a lawyer during a telephone call, prosecutors said.
The Orange County district attorney’s office filed a misdemeanor criminal complaint in Harbor Municipal Court accusing Derek Duncan, 31, of threatening a Newport Beach attorney in July. The attorney was not identified.
Duncan is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 10.
Prosecutors declined to comment on the case, but a source familiar with the complaint said the charge involved a personal matter between Duncan and the attorney that grew out of a civil lawsuit. The dispute did not involve Duncan’s conduct as a DEA agent, they said.
Duncan could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
