Edward James Olmos, who played a demanding calculus teacher in the film “Stand and Deliver,” is now in a position to make a real-life contribution to education.
Olmos is the newest member of the Whittier College board of trustees. He was elected at last month’s board meeting.
“We are honored to welcome Mr. Olmos to our board, a gentleman who has earned international prominence through his artistic work in television, films and on stage,” said Rayburn S. Dezember, the board’s chairman.
Olmos was nominated for an Oscar for his role as Jaime Escalante in “Stand and Deliver,” and won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his work on the television series “Miami Vice.”
The actor is also known for community activism. Olmos joined other public figures in calling for calm during the 1992 Los Angeles riots and helped organize cleanup efforts after the unrest.
