LA HABRA — Wilbert Smith rushed for 184 yards in 17 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead Van Nuys Montclair Prep to a 49-14 victory over La Habra in the first round of the Division VII playoffs Friday night.
The Mounties (10-0) scored 28 points in the first 13 minutes of the game, with Smith scoring three times. He had first-half runs of one, 11 and 24 yards, as Montclair ran the ball at will.
The Mounties finished the game with 254 yards rushing.
La Habra (4-7) scored twice in the second quarter to pull within 14 points. Quarterback Sonje Berge led the way, completing 8 of 14 passes in the first half for 93 yards. He finished the game completing 17 of 35 passes for 185 yards but was intercepted twice.
Despite Berg’s success through the air, both Highlander touchdowns came on the ground on a three-yard run by Berg and a one-yarder by Donny Cisneros.
After pulling to within 28-14 at the half, La Habra seemed to have the momentum, but that changed quickly when Smith went 80 yards on the first play of the second half to give Montclair Prep a 35-14 lead.
