AQMD, Others Defend Electric Car Rule: Four air pollution agencies around the state have called on Gov. Pete Wilson, Cal/EPA Secretary James Strock, state Air Resources Board Chairwoman Jananne Sharpless, California legislators and business associations to resist “auto and oil industry pressure” to relax the state’s 1998 deadline to market the first zero-emission cars. “Our business-community representatives have told us repeatedly to be more aggressive in reducing emissions from motor vehicles,” wrote James M. Lents, executive officer of the South Coast Air Quality Management District, in a letter addressed to Sharpless. Also signing were executives of the San Diego County and Ventura County air pollution control districts.
