My Best Shot

Mark and Carol Nakamura of San Luis Obispo spent two years in Jakarta, where both were teachers--he in kindergarten, she in junior high. During the summer, they toured parts of Asia. Their travels took them to Hiroshima and the Industrial Promotion Hall, the only ruined building allowed to stand as a symbol of the destruction wrought by the atom bomb. The area around the building has been made into Peace Park and as the couple walked around, Mark spotted the rowboats that are for rent. His picture is a souvenir of a trip that meant a great deal to the Nakamuras, who hope to teach overseas again. “It gave us a different perspective on life in America, on teaching and on kids,” he said.
