OUTLOOK
The Knights were one victory from qualifying for the playoffs last season, but lost a league playoff game to Orange. They will almost be starting from scratch. Gone is Coach Dick Bradarich, who lasted only one season. Gone is guard Jared Winger, who averaged 18 points. Thate brings with him experience, but not on the high school level. He has been an assistant at Long Beach State, UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine. This is his first high school job. Getting accustomed to coaching at that level has taken a little time. He was used to working with players who had excellent skills and is now teaching players those skills. “The time you get to spend with players individually is a lot different too,” Thate said. “I would sometimes get to spend an hour with one player.” There is some talent, but not a lot. Dee and Williams are the top players, so the team will have a good inside game. Thate said he has a few good shooters, too, so teams won’t be able to pack it in on defense. The Knights, long a power in the Century League, have been slipping since they last won the league crown in 1990. They finished third in 1991 and fourth last season. Thate won’t be able to turn it around in one season, but he should be able to stabilize the situation.
