‘Flying Short Course’ Seminar Focuses on Media-Eye View

IRVINE — The National Press Photographers Assn.’s “Flying Short Course” at the Hyatt Regency today and tomorrow is a nonprofit educational seminar that will feature photojournalists, TV journalists, a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and others taking part in lectures, workshops and portfolio critiques. Electronic imaging demonstrations and manufacturer’s exhibits will also be available.
Participants will include:
* Elinor Brecher of the Miami Herald, who won the Pulitzer Prize for public service for her coverage of Hurricane Andrew;
* Julie Jones of KPNX-TV in Phoenix, whose work has won the Edward R. Murrow Award, New York Film Festival medals and an Emmy nomination;
* Bradley Clift, a Hartford Courant photographer whose work includes “Streets of Despair,” documenting heroin use in Hartford (Clift will discuss “stories people need to see”);
* Kirk McKoy, a Los Angeles Times photographer who was part of the team that won the Pulitzer for spot news journalism for coverage of the 1992 L.A. riots (McKoy will discuss the riots in terms of “Coverage and Concerns”), and
* Doug Menuez, a free-lance photojournalist for Time, Life, U.S. News, Fortune and other publications, who will discuss “The Life of a Freelancer vs. Having a Life.”
* The National Press Photographers Assn.’s “Flying Short Course” is being offered today from 7:30 to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, 17900 Jamboree Road, Irvine.
