Children age 12 and under can compete for prizes in the 15th annual Halloween costume contest Oct. 30 sponsored by the Conejo Recreation and Park District and The Oaks mall.
Mall merchants have donated prizes for first- and second-place winners with the scariest, most original and cutest costumes in five age categories, said Michael Stadnick, a recreation leader with the park district.
Last year, the event attracted about 280 entries. But Stadnick said children should not participate solely because of the prizes, which include toys, games, food and gift certificates.
“They should go for the thrill of victory,” he said.
Mother-daughter teams from the National Charity League will be judges, Stadnick said. Creative homemade costumes usually win, he added. There is no entrance fee.
The age categories are: up to 23 months, 2 to 3 years, 4 to 5, 6 to 7, and 8 to 12. Registration will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., and competition runs from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Broadway Court at The Oaks mall.
