Leroy Ostransky; Jazz Composer, Teacher and Scholar

Leroy Ostransky, 75, composer, educator and author on jazz. A professor emeritus of music and composer-in-residence at the University of Puget Sound, Ostransky composed five symphonies, a comic opera titled “The Melting of Molly,” and three books, “Understanding Jazz,” “The Anatomy of Jazz” and “Jazz City.” He also wrote an autobiography, “Sharkey’s Kid,” and for 23 years penned a Sunday column called “Notes in Comments” in a local newspaper. Ostransky also had a radio show called “Oh, Oh Ostransky.” On Monday in Tacoma, Wash.
