FULLERTON : Anti-Prop. 174 Meeting Is Tonight

The League of Women Voters of North Orange County is sponsoring a meeting tonight to explain why the league and other groups oppose Proposition 174, the school voucher initiative on the Nov. 2 ballot.

The meeting will be at Ladera Vista Junior High School, 1700 E. Wilshire Blvd., starting at 7:15.

If approved by the state’s voters, Proposition 174 would give parents about $2,600 in government money to be used toward tuition at any voucher-redeeming private, parochial or public school.

“I don’t think that public money should go to any kind of a private entity,” said Mike Kilbourn, director of legislative services for the Orange County Department of Education. Kilbourn will speak at the meeting.

“As time goes on, you would get a separation of elite and public schools,” Kilbourn said. “That is really a step backward.”

Janice Wagner, who works with the League of Women Voters to oppose Proposition 174, will also speak at the meeting. Wagner said that members of the League of Women Voters statewide are in consensus in their opposition to the voucher initiative. The YWCA and American Assn. of University Women will also join tonight in the opposition, she said.
