Nation IN BRIEF : ILLINOIS : State Sues Killer for Prison Stay
- Share via
The state sued John Wayne Gacy for the $141,074 it has spent in the last 11 years keeping the sex slayer of 33 young men and boys on death row. Whether Gacy has any money was not known. But Atty. Gen. Roland Burris said the suit was prompted by reports that a Missouri businessman was selling oil paintings done by Gacy in his cell. Burris acted under a state law that went into effect in 1982 allowing the state to recover the cost of incarceration from prisoners who control any money. Gacy is serving 21 life terms and 12 death sentences. He was convicted in 1980 after investigators dug up skeletons in the crawl space below his suburban Chicago home.
