Fluor’s Construction Subsidiary Wins Pact at Union Carbide Plant

IRVINE — Fluor Daniel said Thursday it has won a contract to expand a Union Carbide plant in Taft, La.
The project at the Star Polyethylene plant near New Orleans will increase production to 1.7 billion pounds a year, up from 650 million pounds now. The plant’s polyethylene is used to make trash bags and industrial liners.
The value of the pact was not disclosed. Fluor Daniel’s office in Houston will provide construction services for the expansion. The project will employ 450 at its peak and is due to be completed in March, 1995.
Fluor Daniel, the international construction subsidiary of Fluor Corp. in Irvine, has had a 10-year presence at Union Carbide’s Taft operation.
Separately Thursday, another Fluor Corp. division said it plans to lay off about 27 of its 135 workers at the Naval Petroleum Reserve in Wyoming. The division, FD Services Inc., blamed declining oil prices.
