SAILING : ULDB 70s Catching Up in Transpac

Bob Lane’s Medicine Man continued to close rapidly on Jerry Montgomery’s pacesetting Patriot in the 37th biennial Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii on Monday, but the ULDB 70s were overtaking Medicine Man.
Patriot, a 40-foot sloop from Alamitos Bay Yacht Club, started last Wednesday and was 815 nautical miles along in the 2,225-mile race at Monday morning’s position report. Medicine Man, starting Friday, had closed to 204 miles back, but the sleds, led by Roy Disney’s Pyewacket, were only 166 miles behind Medicine Man after spotting the Andrews 56 from Long Beach a 225-mile head start Saturday.
At that rate, it was touch and go whether Medicine Man could hold off Pyewacket and a half-dozen other sleds sailing in a tight 15-mile radius before next weekend’s projected finish off DiamondHead.
Winds were reported to be from northwest to northeast at 10-15 knots.
