Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Air Force Accused of Lying About B-1B

Sen. John Glenn (D-Ohio) accused the Air Force of lying about the vulnerability of the B-1B bomber to radar detection and demanded a Pentagon investigation. He said the lie was discovered by the General Accounting Office and publicly disclosed at a hearing on June 10, as part of a GAO probe that concluded the military misled Congress about a number of weapons. The GAO said it found a 1989 Air Force memo saying the agency should be told the B-1B looks 100 times smaller on enemy radar than a B-52 bomber, even though it said the true figure is a still classified number. The Air Force denied that it lied.
