Notes on a Scorecard - June 24, 1993

Maybe two Young awards should be presented in each league--the Cy for the best pitcher and the Anthony for the worst. . . .

If justice were served, Andres Galarraga of the Colorado Rockies would be suspended for as many games as Jody Reed misses because of the elbow injury the Dodger second baseman suffered when Galarraga kicked him. . . .

The Angels won’t stay in contention in the American League West race, as wide open as it is, unless they make a move or two to improve their pitching. Now is the time, not September, when they might be an also-ran. . . .

Next time you try to sit through a three- or four-hour major league game, consider that the games in the 1963 World Series, a sweep for the Dodgers over the Yankees, lasted 2:09, 2:13, 2:05 and 1:50. . . .

The batting average of Kirk Gibson, 36, has gone south, but Detroit Tiger teammates Lou Whitaker, 36, and Alan Trammell, 35, are still hitting well over .300. . . .

It probably won’t be long before the San Diego Padres trade relief pitcher Gene Harris, who delivers smoke. . . .

Robby Thompson and Will Clark are on the last year of contracts with the San Francisco Giants. . . .

Matchmaker Antonio Curtis believes World Boxing Assn. junior-lightweight champion Genaro Hernandez and challenger Raul Perez will put on a great show Monday night at the Forum, but he is hoping they won’t go head-to-head again. On April 26, their fight had to be stopped after only 28 seconds and declared a technical draw when their heads collided and Perez suffered a cut that required 25 stitches to close. . . .

Evander Holyfield expects to weigh 217 pounds--12 more than Nov. 13 when he lost his heavyweight title to Riddick Bowe--when he fights Alex Stewart on Saturday night during a pay-per-view show at Atlantic City. . . .

If Holyfield defeats Stewart, who gave him fits when they fought in 1989, he will challenge Bowe in November at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. . . .

This will mark Emanuel Steward’s debut in Holyfield’s corner. Steward is a capable trainer who guided Thomas Hearns, but whether he will be an improvement over George Benton and Lou Duva is questionable. . . .

Muhammad Ali received the longest standing ovation at the National Sports Awards that was chaired by President Clinton and also honored Wilma Rudolph, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Arnold Palmer and Ted Williams. . . .

“I want to thank you for making me the main event tonight,” Ali said. . . .

Calbert Cheaney, who twice averaged more than 20 points a game in Bobby Knight’s non-star system, should become the best NBA player from Indiana since Isiah Thomas. . . .

Cheaney, Nevada Las Vegas forward J.R. Rider and Duke point guard Bobby Hurley probably are the most talented seniors in the draft. . . .

Sacramento, which picks seventh, likes Hurley. . . .

Rider is explosive--strong, fast and a prolific scorer. . . .

On Wednesday, Chris Webber is expected to become the sixth undergraduate to be picked first in the NBA draft. Magic Johnson was taken first by the Lakers in 1979, Mark Aguirre by the Dallas Mavericks in ‘81, James Worthy by the Lakers in ‘82, Hakeem Olajuwon by the Houston Rockets in ’84 and Shaquille O’Neal by the Orlando Magic in ’92. . . .

Anfernee Hardaway, the point guard from Memphis State, would give the Mavericks a terrific young backcourt, along with Jimmy Jackson. . . .

The Washington Bullets have selected the tallest--7-foot-7 Manute Bol in 1985--and shortest--5-foot-3 Tyrone (Muggsy) Bogues in ‘87--players in NBA history. . . .

Chris Mills of Arizona is the only Pacific 10 Conference player certain to be picked in the first round. . . .

Pepperdine athletic teams compiled a 172-90 record for a winning percentage of .656 during the 1992-93 school year. . . .

Among those who will choose the 1996 U.S. Olympic basketball team are Magic Johnson, Willis Reed and Billy Cunningham. Rod Thorn, who is vice president in charge of operations for the NBA, is chairman of the committee. . . .

The Grade I, $300,000 Beverly Hills Handicap on Sunday at Hollywood Park, featuring Charlie Whittingham’s Flawlessly and Bobby Frankel’s Jolypha, should be one of the best turf races of the year. . . .

The Vince Ferragamo celebrity golf tournament raised $75,000 for the Orange County Special Olympics. . . .

For the first time since their move from St. Louis in 1988, the Phoenix Cardinals are showing an increase in season ticket sales. . . .

When the Raiders open the NFL regular season against the Minnesota Vikings at the Coliseum Sept. 5, it could be the Rocket against the Missile--Raghib Ismail vs. younger brother Qadry.
