Collins, Booth Advance in Oceanside Surf Open

Newport Beach’s Richie Collins and defending champion Jeff Booth of Laguna Beach were among the Orange County surfers who advanced to the quarterfinals Saturday at the Life’s A Beach Open at the Oceanside Pier.
Also advancing were Costa Mesa’s Todd Miller, Jeff Deffenbaugh of Huntington Beach and Seal Beach’s Marty Thomas. Among those eliminated were Dana Point’s Chris Billy and Shane Stoneman of San Juan Capistrano.
In the longboard competition, defending world champion Joey Hawkins of Huntington Beach won his third-round heat.
