AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : White Sox Use Power to Stop the Tigers

Home runs by Dan Pasqua, Frank Thomas and Ellis Burks lifted the White Sox to a 7-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers at Chicago on Monday night.

Pasqua’s three-run homer put Chicago ahead, 6-2, during the sixth inning. Thomas hit a two-run homer and Burks hit a solo shot.

Rookie Jason Bere (2-1) out-pitched Mike Moore for the second time in a week.

Moore (3-3) has lost eight consecutive decisions to the White Sox since June 17, 1990.

Bere struck out nine in six innings, giving up two runs on five hits. He defeated Moore and the Tigers last Wednesday for his first major league victory.

“Yeah, I like pitching against Detroit,” Bere said. “They are a free-swinging team and real aggressive at the plate. I feel better pitching against those kinds of teams. I can keep them off-balance better.”

Texas 8, Minnesota 2--Rafael Palmeiro and Dean Palmer hit two-run homers to lead the Rangers at Arlington, Tex.

Palmeiro’s eighth homer of the season put Texas ahead, 2-1, during the first inning. Palmer’s 15th home run, into a 25-m.p.h. wind, made the score 7-2 during the fifth.

Roger Pavlik (2-2) gave up seven hits in his first complete game of the season. He struck out seven and walked four.

Pavlik worked out of a bases-loaded jam during the fifth by striking out Puckett. Puckett had five consecutive hits against Pavlik this season before that at-bat.

The Rangers scored five runs and had eight hits against Pat Mahomes (1-5) in 3 2/3 innings.

Baltimore 3, Oakland 2--David Segui’s sacrifice fly during the eighth inning let the Orioles extend their winning streak to a season-best five games, at Baltimore.

Harold Baines hit his second homer in two games for the Orioles, who blew a 2-0 lead in the seventh before coming back.

Mike Devereaux led off the eighth with a walk from Rich Gossage (3-3). After Leo Gomez popped out attempting to sacrifice, Chris Hoiles singled and Segui followed with a fly ball to left, too deep for Ricky Henderson to even attempt a throw.

Todd Frohwirth (3-4) got the victory despite giving up the tying run during the eighth. Gregg Olson pitched the ninth for his 14th save, his third in three games.

Oakland has lost four of its last five and seven of nine.

Kansas City 8, New York 3--Mike Macfarlane hit a three-run homer and drove in four runs as the Royals scored their seventh victory in eight games at Kansas City.

Macfarlane hit his homer during the fourth inning and Rico Rossy homered in his first at-bat since being recalled from Omaha.

Kevin Appier (7-4) earned his fifth victory in six decisions, giving up eight hits and three runs in eight innings before Tom Gordon finished.

Jeff Johnson (0-1) gave up seven hits and five runs in 1 1/3 innings in his first appearance since being called up from Columbus on June 2.

Milwaukee 5, Seattle 3--B.J. Surhoff hit a bases-loaded triple to lead the the Brewers over the Mariners at Milwaukee, Seattle’s fourth consecutive loss.

Surhoff’s two-out triple during the third inning extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games. The hit put Milwaukee ahead, 4-0.

Cal Eldred (7-6) gave up three runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. Jesse Orosco finished the seventh and Mike Fetters pitched the eighth. Doug Henry worked the ninth for his 10th save.

Dave Fleming (0-1) gave up four runs on six hits in six innings in his fourth start since coming off the disabled list.

With Milwaukee leading, 1-0, Darryl Hamilton singled to start the third. Robin Yount drew a one-out walk and Dickie Thon was walked intentionally with two out. Surhoff, who entered the game hitting .207, cleared the bases with a drive over the head of center fielder Ken Griffey Jr. for his first triple of the season.
