Fox Shuts Down News Operation: Fox Broadcasting Co. will close its 3-year-old network news service Friday and lay off 30 employees. Fox, which launched the service in 1990, said it is shutting down the operation because not enough of its affiliates were programming local news. Only 40 out of Fox’s 130 affiliated stations have local news. As originally conceived, Fox would feed its affiliates news material that it could then insert in their own local newscasts. Fox said it will continue to provide its affiliates a news feed through its company-owned and -operated WTTG station in Washington.
