23-Month-Old Killed by His Father’s Van

COSTA MESA — A 23-month-old boy was killed Saturday when his father accidentally drove over him with a van while pulling out of a parking space, Orange County coroner’s investigators said.

The boy apparently ran out of an apartment and stepped in front of his father’s van, coroner’s deputy Pat Lorey said.

The accident occurred about 11:30 a.m. in the alley behind the 600 block of Victoria Street, Lorey said.

The boy, identified as Marco Barrera, was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where he died about an hour later.

Lorey said no charges were being considered against the boy’s father, whom he described as distraught over the accident.

“He’s really in bad shape,” Lorey said. “He could barely talk.”
