Three sheriff’s deputies pulled a critically injured man from his burning car after the vehicle veered off the San Diego Freeway in north Long Beach, officials said Thursday.
Joseph Haertsch, Brian McBride and Manuel Scruggs spotted smoke just west of Santa Fe Avenue about 2:40 a.m. and found a 1982 Buick with its engine on fire, said Sheriff’s Lt. Ron Dayhoff. Jaime Alvarez, who is believed to be in his late 20s, was rescued. He was taken to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition.
