Staff members of El Don, Rancho Santiago College’s student newspaper, have won honors in four categories from Columbia University.
El Don, whose staff competed against students from such schools as the University of Washington, the University of Texas, the Chicago School of Fine Arts and Harvard University, was the only community college paper in the nation to receive the awards, said Rancho Santiago Community College District spokesman Dale Ruhe.
The awards are for outstanding achievement in college newspapers, Ruhe said.
The newspaper received third-place awards for news publication design and single-subject reporting. Photographer Cindy Licerio received a certificate of merit for spot news photography, and artist Jorge Ayala earned a certificate of merit for his overall portfolio, Ruhe said.
El Don also won several awards in the Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges’ annual statewide competition. The staff won first place for headline writing, and Ayala took second place for line illustration and third place for magazine illustration.
Ruhe said that other third-place prizes went to the staff for editorial writing and to Larry Murrietta for feature writing.
