Young, the fastest athlete at the Orange County Championships on Saturday, could have gone even faster, Woodbridge Coach George Varvas said. “He did not have his normally explosive start out of the blocks (in the 100 meters),” Varvas said. “I think he has a lot more in him timewise.” Young’s time in the 100--10.82 seconds--was fast enough to win the race and tie the meet record set by Kevin Alexander in 1992. It is the best mark in the county this season. Young, who was named the male sprinter of the meet, also won the 200 in 21.5 and anchored the Woodbridge 400 relay team to a victory in 42.88. He anchored the 1,600 relay team, which finished eighth in 3:25.5. “I think the 200 may be his best event this year but he runs all three so well it’s hard to pick,” Varvas said.

Other top performers:

Dana Hills pitcher Seth Etherton allowed three hits and struck out 14 in a 1-0 victory over Capistrano Valley. He also hit a two-run home run earlier in the week in a 6-3 victory over the Cougars.

Santa Margarita golfer Mark Foster shot two-under-par 34s at San Clemente Municipal and Dove Canyon to help the Eagles to victories over San Clemente and Dana Hills. He also shot three-over 39 at Rancho San Joaquin in a victory over Irvine.

Jim Livernois pitched a one-hitter in La Quinta’s 7-0 victory over Santiago. At the plate for the week, he was seven for eight with four runs batted in.

Orange’s Jaime Martinez set two meet records at the Orange County Championships. He ran 3:57.75 in the 1,500 and 8:40.3 in the 3,000, breaking records Laguna Hills’ Chris Lynch set last year.
