SQUEEZE PLAY: Assemblyman Tom Umberg (D-Garden Grove) is feeling the squeeze as Republicans push for the 10 Democrat votes needed Thursday to salvage Newport Beach Sen. Marian Bergeson’s flagging bid to become state schools chief. . . . Gov. Pete Wilson met with Umberg this week to ask for support; he’s also being pressured by other Bergeson loyalists. On the other side, House Speaker Willie Brown and other Democrats are pressing Umberg to remain in the fold. Umberg’s response to all this: He’s undecided, so far.
