A favorite theme of Social Security critics is that the majority of recipients have used up their contributions in four years. Of course, they fail to say that this is figured in current dollars. If we index for inflation, my contribution of $60,000 over 40 years is now worth $350,000. My annual payments from Social Security, therefore, should take me into my 95th year before I have been fully reimbursed.
