DALE CITY, Va. — A veteran Virginia trooper was found shot to death beside his car in suburban Washington, D.C., early Wednesday and dogs quickly led investigators to two suspects who were later charged in the case.
Trooper Jose Cavazos, 50, apparently was shot during a routine traffic stop, authorities said. Cavazos was found lying near his cruiser on an Interstate 95 ramp in Prince William County by a state transportation worker.
Dogs from the Prince William County Police Department tracked a scent to a nearby motel, where police took two men into custody. The two, identified as Lonnie Weeks Jr., 20, of Fayetteville, N.C., and Louis Jefferson Dukes Jr., 21, of Washington, D.C., were charged with capital murder.
