Cerritos : Businesses May Be Allowed More Banners, Taller Signs

The City Council is considering allowing businesses to use more promotional banners and taller identification signs.
A public hearing and council discussion of the changes, begun last week, will resume at 7 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, Bloomfield Avenue and 183rd Street.
Proposed regulations would allow businesses to use temporary signs for five 14-day periods a year, although the number and size of the signs would be controlled. Automobile dealers would be allowed eight promotional periods.
Previously, such temporary signs were allowed only for grand openings. During last week’s discussion, the council called for limiting the use of balloons, pennants and flags to one business promotion a year.
Proposed amendments would permit taller identification signs at regional centers, including Cerritos Auto Square, Los Cerritos Center and Cerritos Towne Center. Maximum height for placing the signs would go from 50 feet to 80 feet, and signs could also include electronic message displays. The retail center scheduled to be built at Towne Center would be allowed one 15-foot sign and two 20-foot signs.
