Capistrano Valley’s perfect South Coast League record was in peril last Tuesday, but Coach Harlan Peet wasn’t worried. Sure Mater Dei had cut the Cougars’ lead to 38-37 with 13 seconds remaining, but Peet’s best player, point guard White, was at the free-throw line. “You knew both the free throws would be going in,” Peet said. “She’s that type of player. Pressure doesn’t really get to her.” White made both ends of the one-and-one, helping the Cougars to a 40-37 victory. White scored 22 points in the victory and Thursday scored 30 in a 61-54 victory over Dana Hills. White, who will attend Nevada Las Vegas, entered the week averaging 19.2 points and nine assists but boosted her offensive production. “She’ll only do that when she needs to step it up,” Peet said. “She’s very much a team player, but if the other players aren’t doing it, she’ll do it herself.”
Other top performers:
Jessica Eggleston, who had 33 points in Cypress’ 54-38 victory over Esperanza and 22 points and 10 rebounds in a 62-37 victory over Los Alamitos that clinched third place in the Empire League.
Mollie Flint, who had 40 points for Corona del Mar in a 74-35 victory over Irvine, 39 in a 57-38 victory over University and 28 in a 48-40 loss to Tustin.
Deana Itow, who helped Huntington Beach to a share of the Sunset League title, scoring 21 points in a 76-45 victory over Santa Ana. She also had 17 points and 14 assists in a 71-53 victory over Edison.
Jamie Shine, who had 32 points and 17 rebounds as El Modena beat Orange, 54-35, and 21 points and 14 rebounds in a 66-20 victory over Foothill.
