LOMA LINDA, Calif. — Detectives searched Monday for a gunman who fled with a 4-year-old boy after shooting the child’s mother to death in a hospital parking lot.
Police want to question the boy’s father, Juan Manuel Navarro, about the slaying. The boy’s condition and whereabouts were unknown, but “we’re assuming (Navarro) has him,” San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department dispatcher Sean Kelly said Monday.
Ignacia Manriquez, 29, was shot Sunday while leaving the emergency room at Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she and Juan Jr. had gone for flu treatment.
Relatives of Manriquez described Navarro as a former boyfriend. Manriquez left Navarro in San Bernardino about two months ago to live with her parents in Coachella, said Felipa Manriquez, the dead woman’s sister.
Navarro harassed Manriquez until she got a court order to keep him away, the sister said.
“He was upset about the whole situation. . . . He kept threatening her that he was going to do this and that,” Felipa Manriquez said.
The couple also had two daughters, 7 and 11 years old.
