Weather Potpourri Brings Hail, Rain and Lightning

TIMES STAFF WRITER

A fast-moving thunderstorm pummeled Orange County on Sunday evening, bringing hail, rain, thunder and lightning but causing slight damage before quickly departing the region.

The storm was expected to leave partly cloudy skies in its wake, but no rain is forecast for today or Tuesday.

Scattered power outages related to the storm were reported in San Clemente, according to police, who had no details on the number of homes affected. But unlike its predecessors over the past month, the fast-moving storm apparently caused no flooding or mudslides, according to Orange County fire departments and other authorities.

Marble-size hail was reported throughout the county, including in Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano and Huntington Beach. Information on total rainfall was not available from WeatherData Inc., which provides weather information for The Times.

The Anaheim Fire Department said it did not expect Sunday evening’s storm to cause any further problems with homes in the Anaheim Hills area, where dozens of families have been evacuated because of landslides caused by last month’s torrential rains.

In an incident unrelated to the storm, four lanes of southbound Interstate 405 at Von Karman Avenue in Irvine were closed for about 90 minutes Sunday afternoon after a 10-inch water main next to the freeway ruptured at 5:50 p.m, sending a 40-foot geyser of water onto part of the freeway.

Southbound traffic backed up for at least a mile as Irvine Ranch Water District crews repaired the break, which did not disrupt service to any homes or businesses. The freeway reopened after 7 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

Dean Jones, a meteorologist with Weatherdata Inc., said Sunday’s storm originated in the mountains north of Los Angeles and was building all day before beginning its rapid trip across Southern California.

Jones said the storm was expected to move southeast and into the desert before dissipating early Monday morning.
