Man Missing After 2 Fall From Boat

A man who fell overboard from a large sailboat near the entrance to the Los Angeles Harbor was plucked from the water by the Coast Guard, which was still searching the ocean Sunday night for a second man, officials said.

“We’re out looking for him now,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer Simone Brisco.

A helicopter and three boats were searching the area just outside the harbor’s breakwater, where rescuers reported encountering five-foot seas and winds of 20 m.p.h.

“It’s very stormy out there. There’s very little surface showing, and it’s hard to see,” said Petty Officer Kelly Ream.

The first man toppled from the sailboat at about 7:30 p.m., and the second man apparently fell in trying to rescue him, Brisco said.

The second man is 63 and was not wearing a life jacket, Ream said.

The two men were apparently the only ones aboard the 42-foot sailboat.

The first man spent about 15 minutes in the water before being pulled out by the Coast Guard. He was exhausted but appeared to be in good condition, Brisco said. It was then that rescuers learned that a second man had gone overboard.

There was no indication whether the incident was triggered by the storm that arrived in Southern California late Sunday afternoon.
